I think Grandma made these every Saturday night to have for Sunday so that when anyone came to visit she would have them on hand. She must have made them in a jellyroll pan because when I have tried to make them in a regular 9 x 13 pan — they just don’t seem the same.
But then nothing we try to make seems to taste as good as Mom’s!
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening (Grandma K used Crisco)
1 cup applesauce (and you know it was her own home made applesauce!)
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup raisins
1/4 cup nuts
1 tsp vanilla
Mix all together – I’m sure the original recipe had more thorough direction, but this is how she gave it to me!
Put in greased pan so as not to stick.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.
